The Ultimate Guide to Spring Cleaning Singapore

November 16, 2022

Let’s face it, being in a cluttered space makes us anxious. Humans can only process so much information from their surroundings. Hence, a messy room has too many visual distractions which can often cause our brains to be overwhelmed and stressed out. With remote working becoming the new norm, it is important for us to declutter our home and make it a conducive space for both working and living. Not sure of what to do? Fret not, we have prepared this ultimate A to Z guide to get you started!

Step 1: Get Started

Cleaning is not that difficult, the hardest part is to drag yourself out of the bed and actually get started. More often than not, the thought of having to clean a big space scares us, but it shouldn’t be. In Singapore, most of us live in a housing unit that should only take a day or less to thoroughly declutter and clean the house. Get the vacuum and mops ready, prepare boxes and disinfectants, put them all in the living room the night before, and have a good sleep. Wake up and get started! Get your family members to join you for a great bonding session and speed up the process!

Step 2: Declutter

First, get rid of the things you no longer need and/or want. For objects that can’t be reused, pack them neatly into card boxes or rubbish bags and place them at the collection bin centre. For items that can be reused, you can give them to families, friends, and even neighbours who want them. Alternatively, you can also donate them to The Salvation Army and help those who are less fortunate. Once you have gotten rid of all the unwanted items, give yourself a pat on the shoulder, and....the real cleaning begins!

Step 3: Wash Linens

That’s right! Change out those dirty bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, curtains, sofa covers, etc and 1,2,3 throw them into the washing machine for a ‘shower’. Also, not forgetting about doormats, they deserve a good clean too! Remember to separate your bedsheets, pillowcases, and blankets with the rest for hygienic purposes! While the washing machine is working hard, let’s get to the next step!

Step 4: Living Room

Since the decluttering process is completed, your job is much simpler now.

  • Vacuum sofas and rugs (if it is not washable) to get rid of dust and occasionally food crumbs
  • Use fabric fresheners to eliminate odours
  • Wipe windows with glass cleaners
  • Take down the fans and give them a good clean
  • Wipe shelves, drawers, and all the objects in the living room
  • Organise your items by category such as books, gaming consoles, photo frames, etc
  • Put frequently used items in one easy-to-reach corner
  • Avoid putting things on the coffee table except for remote controls and decorations to create a neat look

Step 5: Bedroom

  • Wash all linens (refer to Step 3)
  • Organise vanity
  • Wipe windows with glass cleaners
  • Put a dehumidifier in the closet to prevent mold and keep clothes smelling fresh

Step 6: Kitchen

  • Discard expired food
  • Disinfect drawers to prevent pest
  • Re-organise the fridge: one category for each shelf (fruits and vegetables, raw meats, drinks, etc) depending on your lifestyle
  • Remove stains from countertops using stain removers
  • Disinfect kitchen appliances such as microwaves, kettles, toasters
  • Wash the sink and unclog drains

Step 7: Floors

  • When we clean the house, dust and dirt will naturally fall to the floor. Hence, it is wise to leave the floor to the second last step.
  • Vacuum the whole house from bedroom, living room to the kitchen
  • Mop the house in the same sequence (tip: leave the fans on to dry the floor faster)
  • Use disinfectant if you wish (may make the floor a bit sticky)

Step 8: Bathroom

Almost there! After you discard the mopping waters, time to clean the last part of the house...bathroom!

  • Scrub the floors and walls with cleaners specifically for the toilet
  • Clean shower, sink, and counters
  • Wipe down mirrors and re-organise your cabinets
  • Disinfect the toilet bowl, both inside and outside
  • Keep the floor dry to prevent slipping
  • Use air freshener if you want to eliminate smells

And there you have it! A brand new look for your home sweet home! You may be exhausted by now but it is totally worth it.
