Do you know that there are two main types of vinyl flooring in Singapore? LVT and SPC have emerged to become homeowners’ go-to choices due to the price, durability, convenience, and design. However, the information available on the internet is too little and unclear. So, let us objectively make a comparison and assist you in picking the best fit for your dream home!
LVT is the traditionally preferred choice made by homeowners. LVT is a synthetic material made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other compounds and topped with a urethane-based coating that protects it from scratches or dents. It consists of several layers while remaining flexible enough to be cut with a knife. LVT is effective at absorbing shock and reducing movement noise. At the same time, it closely resembles hardwood floors, giving an organic feeling of walking on wood surfaces. LVT is thus endorsed by homeowners as an affordable alternative to real wood, stone, or even ceramic flooring.
Traditional LVT ranges from 2mm to 4mm. Due to the thinness, LVT may take on the shape of any subfloor imperfections. You will need to ensure that your subfloor is dent-free before installing LVT flooring. High-quality LVT is usually thicker (and more expensive), measuring above 8mm of thickness.
With many benefits such as water-resistant, durable, easy to clean and install, LVT is an ideal option for basements, kitchens, bathrooms, as well as other high-traffic areas. Moreover, it is DIY friendly with different methods of installation: glue down, loose lay, or click-lock installation. With so many different designs and colors to choose from, you are sure to find one that matches the style of your dream home!
Regardless, it is important to consider that while the LVT is durable, it is not 100% damage-proof. Placing heavy appliances such as refrigerators will leave dents on the flooring.
Stone plastic composites (SPC) is a type of flooring that consists of multiple layers, with an SPC core layer comprising calcium powder, a stabiliser, and PVC powder. SPC flooring boasts a high resistance to wear and dents due to its material components, consisting primarily of stone. SPC is a more eco-friendly flooring option than LVT, as the latter uses plasticiser in its formation.
Standard SPC flooring is thicker than traditional LVT. It measures between 4mm to 6mm in thickness. Due to its thickness and the density of the SPC vinyl’s core construction, SPC provides added support underfoot compared to LVT. SPC floors also have heat and sound insulation properties, hence they tend to produce minimal noise when walked on.
SPC flooring’s resilience to wear and dents make it an ideal flooring choice for areas with high foot traffic like offices and commercial spaces. Like traditional LVT floors, SPC vinyl flooring can be installed by glue-down or click-lock installation methods.
However, similar to LVT, SPC is not 100% damage-proof. Placing heavy appliances such as refrigerators will leave dents on the flooring. This is generally due to the nature of vinyl flooring being made from plastic.

Both LVT and SPC are fairly similar and it is ultimately up to your preference and lifestyle. If you want something more DIY-friendly, go for LVT. Prefer a more eco-friendly option? SPC is the one you need!
