Open-concept Kitchens: Pros and Cons

November 16, 2022

Open-concept kitchens are gaining popularity in Singapore where houses are getting smaller. As they create the illusion of a bigger space and a smooth flow of vision of the house. While open-concept kitchens are aesthetically pleasing, is it worth the hype? Here are the main benefits and drawbacks you need to know before hacking down that wall!

What are Open-Concept Kitchens?

An open kitchen, also known as an open-concept kitchen, is one that has no walls separating it from the rest of the house. An open kitchen floor plan may extend into the dining room, living room, and others which results in a visual of one large room.

Advantages:

1. The Illusion of a Bigger Space

Having no wall between the kitchen and other living spaces makes the house look larger in general. The main living spaces of the house (living room, dining room, kitchen) are connected, thereby creating a smooth flow of vision. In land-scarce Singapore, houses are getting smaller. At times, homeowners may even feel restricted as they do not have much space to move around. Having an open-concept kitchen will help to make your home visually bigger and more livable!

2. Entertain Guests While Cooking

If you love to host dinner or gatherings at home, an open-concept kitchen is a wonderful choice for you! No wall between the kitchen and living room means that you can converse with people outside the kitchen space. This makes an open-concept kitchen the perfect fit for your home because you can entertain your guests while preparing delicious meals at the same time!

3. Supervise Children While Cooking

An issue many parents face is that there is no one to watch their child when they are cooking. An open-concept kitchen provides a solution to that! Parents can look out of the kitchen space and supervise their children at any moment. This can help to reduce the chances of any unfortunate incident from occurring. Similarly, homeowners can also keep an eye on the elderly who may need assistance.

4. Natural Lighting

The concept allows natural lights to brighten up the whole house, making it look bigger. Also, this helps to save your electricity bills too! You no longer need to switch on the kitchen lights on sunny days!

Disadvantages:

1. Need to Upkeep

One issue you may face with an open-concept kitchen is that everything can be seen from the living room. The dirty dishes, messy countertops, used pans, oil stains, you name it. These will make your living space look messier and attract insects. Without the wall to separate the kitchen and living spaces, bugs can travel to other parts of the house. Hence, to maintain a neat and hygienic kitchen, there is a need to clean your space frequently. This may not be the most ideal choice for working professionals who don’t have much time to care for the house.

2. Smell

Who doesn’t love the smell of tea and pancakes in the bright morning? But...how about the smell of belachan, overnight dirty dishes, bleach, and so on? Not so much. An open-concept kitchen allows smells from the cooking to spread around the house almost instantly. Imagine your bedroom smelling like the fried chicken you cooked for dinner. That...doesn’t sound good. However, this will not be a problem if you only do light-cooking at home.

Solutions!

Well, the disadvantages should not deter you from having one! Cleaning more frequently helps! Alternatively, a simple solution is to install collapsible glass panels to separate the two spaces. Unlike concrete walls, collapsible glass panels do not prevent any natural lights from entering the kitchen. At the same time, the smell from heavy cooking will not enter the rest of your house. When not cooking, you can easily keep the panels aside and voila, space is connected!
